Contraindications
The word contraindication means a condition or circumstance that suggests or indicates that a particular technique or drug should not be used in the case in question.
For our purposes, the items below are known contraindications for techniques that I use in transformational breathing sessions. If you have one of these, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t participate. But I highly recommend you get approval from a medical provider first, and to also let me know so I can properly guide you.
-
Strong emotional release and/or physical movement can put stress on the cardiovascular system. If your high blood pressure is not controlled with medication and is 140/90+, please consult your medical provider.

-
There is a slightly increased chance of having a seizure during breathwork due to the faster deeper breathing. This does not mean you cannot participate, but I recommend your medical provider’s approval, and to be sure to let me know so I can share modification options.
-
If either you have had an aneurysm or if more than one person in your immediate family (parent, child or sibling) has had one, I recommend avoiding transformational sessions.
The reason is because with activating breathwork techniques, you could feel compelled to spontaneously start moving around and/or vocalizing while emotional material is being released, which could place the arteries of the brain under strain.
If you have already had an aneurysm, this type of experience may put you at increased risk of having another.
-
Particularly psychosis, paranoia, bipolar, or schizophrenia. Transformational breathwork techniques could trigger a manic episode.
-
Transformational techniques can be incredibly healing for addiction and mental concerns, such as PTSD. However, if you are not currently seeking care, the mental and emotional items that could come up could be too triggering. If you are currently working through a severe case and are under a therapist’s care, please be sure to get approval prior to participating in a transformational session.
-
Breathing faster and deeper reduces intraocular pressure. This increases the risk of having permanent vision damage for a person with a detached retina, or can make glaucoma worse.
-
If you have a severe case of osteoporosis, whereby moving around actively could cause physical damage to your body, you should avoid a transformational session. (this is very rare for most people)
-
If you have asthma, you must have your inhaler available. If you have any concerns, I recommend you get your medical provider’s approval, and to be sure to let me know so I can share modification options.
-
Transformational breathing techniques can elicit strong physical responses. It is best to wait until your body is healed before participating in a transformational session.
-
Most are safe but it is best to check with your medical provider if you regularly take medication. Please feel free to contact me as well.
-
A transformational session should be avoided to prevent a trigger of premature contractions.
